Unveiling the Mysteries of Mongolia: my upcoming book and why you should consider visiting Mongolia too

Updated: May 18

Mongolia is a land of immense beauty and rich tradition, where vast landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see. During my three-month solo expedition across this captivating country, I tested my physical limits and discovered cultures that transformed my outlook on life. If you are an adventure seeker, let me share why a solo expedition in Mongolia should be on your travel list.

The Landscape of Mongolia

Mongolia is known for its stunning open spaces and varied terrains, from the arid Gobi Desert to the lush Taiga forests of the north and the Altai mountains in the West. I traveled across rolling plains, climbed steep mountains, and explored hidden valleys empty of all live. The feeling of being utterly alone in a vast expanse was both exhilarating and humbling. On several occasions, I found myself over one hundred kilometers away from the nearest human settlement.

In this wilderness, survival is key. Knowing the climate is essential, as conditions can change dramatically. I found myself fighting sandstorm, as I made a hard push towards a town for two days without sleep. The harsh environment doesn't only pose challenges, it offers incredible opportunities for personal growth and resilience. Especially when you overcome hardship and local communities give you a warm welcome.

The Warmth of the People

The people where the biggest surprise during my three month solo expedition. In spite of the harsh surroundings, I encountered genuine warmth in local communities. Mongolian herders, who have lived traditionally in their gers for generations, welcomed me into their home for me to rest my weary head.

These experiences enriched my journey with cultural insights and a deeper appreciation for the strong community ties woven into Mongolian life.

One of my favorite experiences was meeting the unique ethnic groups within Mongolia. In Northern Mongolia, I visited the reindeer people in the Taiga forests, where they practice shamanism honoring ancient spirits. It humbled me when they appreciated our company when we shared a place around a campfire.

Facing the Elements

Embarking on a solo expedition in Mongolia means preparing for harsh conditions is vital, as many regions are far from help. My carefully planned two-thousand-kilometer route included waypoints that were essential for navigating natural barriers. I plotted emergency waypoints within two days' walking of my route. In the vast Mongolian wilderness, there are many dangers that could stop your expedition. That is not to say that Mongolia is unsafe. As long as you are well prepared to face the changing elements, you travel in a country that has little aggression towards strangers.

But there is something profoundly invigorating about exploring an open land that feels entirely yours. The solitude I faced offered both a challenge and a liberation. As I roamed the landscape alone, I found time for inward reflection, experiencing clarity amidst the vastness. These reflections are an essential part of the book I write about my Mongolian exploration.

Being disconnected from everyday life allowed me to reflect deeply, create a bond with my animals, and listen to nature without distractions. Those moments of quiet contemplation emphasized the path to self-discovery.
