"I want to explore human behaviour.

To do that, I have to experience first hand what people go through."

Rick Jens is a cultural researcher with a background in journalism and military service. His work takes him from indigenous tribes to active frontlines — not to document spectacle, but to understand how humans endure, adapt, and create meaning with the odds against them.

Becoming a Nomad

Rick Jens

Almost

finished

During a three-month solo expedition researching Mongolian culture, I stumbled upon something unexpected. As I stepped into a different pace of life by traveling like a nomad myself, I noticed that the stresses I endured at home quickly vanished. While exploring rural Mongolia, its harsh climate and close-knit communities helped me let go of years of overthinking. I gained new insights about myself as well as about Mongolian life. My new book is a reflection on that journey and a mirror on Western and Eastern culture.

Intrigued by medical volunteers working in war zones, I became a medical volunteer myself. I traveled to Ukraine without a set plan, completed a combat medic course, and found work on an ambulance. In a war where medical personnel and facilities are deliberately targeted, life was constantly uncertain.

My upcoming film Stuck Between War and Conviction follows this journey.
